HydroWeb - Hints and Assessments

Start of the HydroWeb course (08 Nov 2022)

Welcome to HydroWeb 2022!

Information and hints for the start of the team work:

Team Composition

Four teams have been set up with students from Barcelona, Cottbus and Nice.
Please have a look on the team list page for the actual team composition.

Supervisor Support

During HydroWeb you can contact the supervisor online via the Internet. Please have a look on the supervisor calendar for the availability of the supervisor. You can also contact your local lecturers, EuroAquae students might alao contact students from semester 3, who did the same team work last year.

Preparation Work

Before starting the team work:
Each team member should have performed the first steps of the team kick-off:

First Steps of Team Work

First steps in all teams should be the performance of the team kick-off.
This includes:

An efficient way of team collaboration is based on an interaction agreement: rules and agreements how to communicate and to coordinate the team work. These rules and agreements have to be defined inside the teams and agreed by ALL team members. You should specify the tools/software/services you would like to use in your team as well as how, when and by whom it should be used for your internal team communication and collaboration. All teams should consider the mix of synchronous and assynchronous work. Please try to discuss this topic before you start to work on the team exercise with Mike11.
The interaction agreement could define working methods to avoid access problems on the shared team work space, to communicate inside the team as well to report the team progress and working steps. We recommend to agree on one Messenger system (e.g. Skype) and to agree, that all team member should show their online status. Please define rules to name folders and files on the team work space, e.g. with the name of the editor, the location and the date. Please do not use spaces in the folder names!

The whole team work can be performed in combination of closed collaboration and work distribution for parallel working. Please discuss the general team tasks such as reporting in respect to these two options. The minutes or disussions are a suitable way to inform all team members about the actual situation and progress in your team. One part of your interaction agreement inside your team could be, that all work and problems has to be reported in the minutes and all team members should read this before they start their work.

For each work package you should have a team meeting to discuss the details of this working step and to find the team colleagues, who could do this. On the next team meeting they should explain their work to their team mates (e.g. with application sharing mode of Hangouts, Skype, Adobe Connection Pro or other tools).
Work package 1 (WP1) can be distributed in the following way:

  • Group 1: WP1.2 and WP1.3
  • Group 2: WP1.4
  • Group 3: WP1.5
  • all Groups: WP1.6
  • The work load of WP1.2 and WP1.3 is lower than WP1.4 and WP 1.5, WP 1.6 requires the input from all all WP 1.2-1.5. For teams with only one team member from Barcelona, it might be suitable to give him/her WP 1.3 only and to combine WP1.2 with WP1.4.

I will provide begin of 2nd week some additional information/hints to perform the work packages WP1.2 to WP1.5. Please do not start with the course exercise / Mike11 before you have a proper team start and specification of your team collaboration approach.

All sub teams (students in one team at one location) are asked to send me a sub team photo to be published on the course platform. In addition please make also a photo of all students at your location. The photos are published on the team photo page.

    Exercise

If you start to work on the exercise with Mike11, we recommend to use always a complete file data set in one folder. Such folder should have an unique name including the responsible location/person, date and related work package. Please report ALL changes inside the files in the team reports and model list! This will help you and your team mate later to combine several model folders of parallel working to a new resulting model folder.

    Remote Desktop Server Nice

HydroWeb is using the EuroAquae Application Server in Nice as server to run Mike11 and as shared file server. The RDP connection has to be done within the Nice campus network (VPN connection!). Both is managed by the colleagues in Nice. In case of technical problems: please contact the colleagues in Nice. I will inform you asap I receive information from Nice about the login to the server.

    Final Remark

Please do not forget: All your team colleagues are also beginners in this game and maybe will interact and think in different ways. HydrWeb is a 'try-and-error' experiment. Please do not hesitate to contact me in case of any kind of problems.
