We suggest to run some smaller exercises to become familiar with the MIKE 11 and the MIKE View tools before starting to edit the complex model of river Vidå. This can be performed individually using the MIKE 11 demo version or the licensed version on the application server. The demo version is free available from the DHI web page and can be installed on your local PC.
Please set up a complete new MIKE 11 model.
The new model should contain a straight channel of
about 5000 m with a regular rectangle cross-section of
about 50 m width and 10 m depth.
The boundary condition are given by the discharge q(t)=0
(closed channel) at one side and by the water level h(t)
at the other side. Please specify the water level
time series by a constant water level h0
plus a peak of h0 + dh at the second time serie
to generate a 'wave' in the system.
Please simulate the system with different h0
values such as 2m, 4m, 6m, 8m and compare the results
with the theory in respect to the wave speed. Consider
a suitable time and space approximation (dt and dx).
Please use the standard properties of the MIKE11
hydrodynamic model for all other parameters.

Please adapt the first model by two new branches (Y-model) and related boundary conditions. In a second step you should introduce a slope in the system by changing the cross-section y-coordinates.
The DHI Software contains two example models. One is the model of the river Cali (directory Demo). You can use this model to add a small weir.
The DHI Software contains a model of the river Vidå. This model is the base of the course exercise. You can use this demo model to become familiar with the river system. Please consider that you can't simulate the system in the Demo version (restriction on time and grid points). You can login on the course server to run the model with the course network licence.
