Concept - Local Requirements - Team WorkSpaces - Access - Mike11
Key idea of the Web-based platform for HydroWeb is to overcome the spatial distribution of the participants and to allow a location independent access to all computer facility on a common server system via the Internet. The platform integrates all documents, information, data files, simulation tools and other kind of "software" for the course in one common virtual environment.
The Web-based platform is based on several server for different services (such as Web-Server, Conference-Server, EMail-Server, Application-Server), but appears to the EuroAquae students as one unit in the Internet. The platform is not perfect and might be improved step by step over the years. However, with the experiences from HydroWeb and HydroEurope the actual approach is much better then no platform :-).
Students did not need any special hardware or software to participate in HydroWeb. Details for hard- and software are given below.
Each student need access to:
I assume that most students run their computer with Mickysoft based operation systems such as Windows 7 or 10. However, the concept of HydroWeb is platform independent, so all software is also available for other operation systems such as Linux or MacOS.
All this software is free available or part of the operation systems. The participants should have a free login for Google, ... via the Internet to use this tools.
The key idea of the Web-based platform is to set-up a virtual working space
in the Internet for master students to collaborate in HydroWeb.
This requires an open network access to the platform
and an open conferencing access between all locations.
In the last years most universities set-up central firewalls to protect
their local system/network. This requires VPN (virtual private network)
and cloud solutions to enable shared project environments
as virtual working space.
The platform HydroWeb 2022 is divided in two parts:
The common course work space (http://euroaquae.tu-cottbus.de/hydroweb) covers all general issues of HydroWeb and provides the following components:
a list of documents on basics and services of the course
| this short description of the course platform
| a list of team members for each team
| photos of the team members at the different locations
| a table containing the general schedule of the education experiment
| a work plan template for a collaborative project perfornamce
| a bulletin board providing the latest news from the supervisor
| a list of the supervisor amd team mailing addresses of the EuroAqaue Modlue 1.5
| a detailed description of the exercise task
| the given Mike11 model data of the exercise
| |
The course work space is managed by Frank Molkenthin. Plaese feel free to send me suggestion to optimze this part of the whole platform.
The team work space provides each team shared computer services and team Web space for shared documentation, coordination, communication and model management. The team work space is managed by the teams themselves.
The shared computer service provides the opportunity to work on a commom team computer sharing all resources esp. the file system and the installed software. This service is provided via Remote Desktop Connection to use a Windows server computer in Cottbus with the provided login. This login will enable the access to the engineering software (Mike11), and to a local file system with shared directories for each team.
The team Web space is a template framework based on Google Site. This framework links other Google services such as Google Groups, Google Calendar and Google Docs/Drive. Team members can edit the team Web space within the Google Web services environment. The four Gougle services are used as follow:
team web space (homepage)
| email discussion, email archive
| time coordination
| team reports
| |
The team web space as Google site is predesigne as temple with some basic pages and a basic layout. Teams can change and adapt this starting position in team responsibility.
Each student has a protected login on the EuroAquae Windows server in Nice as shared computer service. Participants get access to this server via Remote Desktop Connection.

Please store your files on drive (??) D: (?? - to updated for the Nice Server !!) in directory HydroWeb in the folder with your team name (Team1, Team2, Team3 or Team4).
The Web space of each team is linked in the course platform http://euroaquae.tu-cottbus.de/hydroweb via buttons in the foot part of this web page.
All team members will be invited to join the team group and the team site using their Google account. The team calendar is a Google calendar managed by the course supervisor and shared to the team members.
Please browse to the HydroWeb BigBlueButton room and enter with your name.
Please browse to https://webconf.vc.dfn.de/hydroweb and enter as guest with your name.
The course uses the commercial software product MIKE11 from DHI with an educational network licence (25 users) for the numerical simulation of the river on the course platform.
